About the Art

Marc Chagall was a pioneer for Jewish artists, he had a distinct style of painting dream like scenes of personal history and European folklore. He was a painter, printmaker, book illustrator, and he even made stained glass windows. He began experimenting with Cubism in 1910 when he moved to Paris and his style is considered a mixture of Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism. His supernatural subjects are also thought to have significantly influenced surrealism.

Daphnis and Chloe is an ancient Greek novel by Longus, it has been adapted into film, opera, and ballet. Chagall created 42 lithographs based on the tale of the two love birds and their perils as they grow up together as sheep and goat herders while trying to understand their love for each other.
