About the Art
Matisse originally created paper cut-outs in preparation for completing artworks in other materials. Towards the end of his life as his health declined, he began to create cut-outs as final products, and in doing so, he pushed the boundaries of what a work of art could be. This work is an original print of a cutout from his famous blue series. Although the paper appears to be arranged casually and simply, the design is intentional and powerful.
Henri Matisse is well-regarded as the master of color of the 20th century. He was a versatile artist who created paintings, sculptures, and works on paper.
