About the Art

Salvador Dali is considered one of the most known artists of all time. He was born in Catalonia, Spain in 1904 and is widely known for the risks he took in art and film. An artist that defined surrealism, Dali’s works are extremely complex and dynamic. Drawing on everything from everyday life to religious symbols his pieces, while bizarre, are extremely technical. He fully embraced pure, boundless creativity in his art and life and was considered a very eccentric individual. In many of his paintings, Dali used anamorphosis, a form of eccentric and exaggerated perspective which distorts objects beyond recognition; however, when seen from a particular skewed viewpoint, a legible depiction emerges. He used the power of this technique to conceal “secret” or “forbidden” images in plain sight. That is why when looking at a Dali just a change in viewpoint can completely change the image in front of you and this skillful mastery of art is just one of many reasons that make him timeless.

Calliope is the muse who presides over eloquence and epic poetry; so called from the ecstatic harmony of her voice. Hesiod and Ovid called her the “Chief of all Muses.” Dali’s elegant rendition of her has her fittingly speaking at a podium. His threadlike line-work is enchanting, as much so as the transparent and fluid dress draped over her body. The soft pink clouds add a sort of whimsy very typical of a Dali.
