About the Art
This is a photocolor on paper after a lithograph from Marc Chagall’s Daphnis et Chloe portfolio. Chagall was asked to illustrate the ancient Greek story before he embarked on a honeymoon trip to Greece. The story’s theme of young love overcoming adversity fit with Chagall’s life story. The artist created 42 stunning lithographs as part of the project. Chagall’s Daphnis et Chloe lithographs are considered his most colorful and technically suburb collection of prints. In this piece, he expressively captures the pastoral landscape where much of the story takes place.
Chagall was a versatile artist who worked in almost every medium. In his work he fused multiple artistic styles with symbols from his Jewish heritage.
