About the Art
This is an original color lithograph from a biblical series Chagall was commissioned to create for a deluxe edition of the literary magazine Verve. Chagall had a lifetime fascination with the Bible and he called it “the greatest source of poetry of all time.” Using a whimsical yet sensitive style, he highlighted key moments from the Old Testament.
David is described as the second king of the united kingdom of Israel and Judah after Saul. He was a shepherd and also led Israel on military campaigns. The lord appointed him as king and said, “You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.” David reigned for forty years and he became very powerful because the lord almighty was with him.
