About the Art
This is a lithograph from a series of biblical illustrations Marc Chagall did in 1960 for the literary magazine Verve. The print depicts a section from a story in which Abraham introduces Sarah as his sister instead of his wife leading King Abimelech to take her for himself. Chagall depicts the moment in which God, shown here as a red angel in the sky, intervenes and tells Abimelech the truth.
Marc Chagall was a versatile artist who worked in almost every medium. In his work he fused multiple artistic styles with symbols from his Jewish heritage.
