About the Art
This is a color lithograph after an original gouache that was a study for a section of the Paris Opera ceiling. In 1963, Chagall received the commission to redo the ceiling of the Paris Opera House. For the project, he combined scenes and characters from the most beloved operas and plays. Chagall chose to translate many of his works into color lithographs because it allowed him the freedom to work directly on the plate and work with vibrant colors.
Chagall was a versatile artist who worked in almost every medium. In his work he fused multiple artistic styles with symbols from his Jewish heritage.
