About the Art
This original color lithograph was part of a series Chagall completed on the theme of the circus. The work features a large clown who is watched by spectators amid a vibrant yellow background. Chagall was fascinated by color lithography as a medium because it allowed him more painterly freedom than other printing techniques and enabled him to use vivid colors. His lithographs are still highly collectible today.
Chagall was a versatile artist who worked in almost every medium. In his work he fused multiple artistic styles with symbols from his Jewish heritage.
