About the Art
This is an original lithograph made after a cut-out by Henri Matisse. It was produced under Matisse’s supervision for a special edition of the literary magazine Verve. The print is quite intricate and complex. The face of the god Apollo appears in the center under a sunburst fan. He is surrounded by three trees, a series of colorful flowers, and finally two columns. Although the work contains many details, the composition is still balanced and symmetrical.
Henri Matisse is well-regarded as the master of color of the 20th century. He was a versatile artist who created paintings, sculptures, and works on paper.
