About the Art
This is an original lithograph based on a goauche cut-out by Henri Matisse. The original cut-out was Matisse’s largest, and it was initially conceived as a full-scale study for a ceramic mural. Though the piece has many elements, it is symmetrical and rational in composition. The bright colors and repetition of form give this piece a dynamic energy. Matisse was a master at “painting with scissors.”
Henri Matisse is well-regarded as the master of color of the 20th century. He was a versatile artist who created paintings, sculptures, and works on paper.
