About the Art
This work is an original lithograph after a cut-out done in 1953. It was part of a series of prints included in a special edition of the literary magazine Verve dedicated to the final works of Henri Matisse.
The print is at once abstract and realistic. The slips of paper form the spiral of a snail, the title and subject of the print. Matisse first drew a snail from life and then created an abstract version seen here.
