Bks. 42), the complete book, comprising 48 lithographs, 25 printed in colors, with accompanying text by Gaston Bachelard, both published by Editions de la Revue Verve, 1956 and 1960, on wove paper, in good condition, bound as issued; together with verve, vols. i-ix, nos. 1-12, 14-32, 35-36, a large group of periodicals, with illustrations of artists’ work, some duplicate volumes, all published by Editions de la Revue Verve, 1937-58, on wove paper.

About the Art

This color lithograph is from a 1956 edition of the literary magazine Verve dedicated to the biblical art of Marc Chagall. The artist depicts David playing the harp while lost in thought. David is partially colored in purple, the color of royalty. The vibrant and expressive use of color is typical of the artist.

Marc Chagall was a versatile artist who worked in almost every medium. In his work he fused multiple artistic styles with symbols from his Jewish heritage.
