About the Art
This is an original lithograph by Marc Chagall. The artist was commissioned by the literary magazine Verve to create a series of biblical lithographs for a special edition of the publication. In this lithograph, the prophet Jeremiah holds the Torah scroll tightly against his chest in a pose similar to that of mother and child. At once tender and somber, this work exhibits Chagall’s mastery of color and ability to convey emotion.
Chagall was a versatile artist who worked in almost every medium. In his work he fused multiple artistic styles with symbols from his Jewish heritage.
